SEO Isn’t Dead. Search Is Changing - Here’s What You Need to Do Next.

For years, one of the easiest ways to judge SEO performance was simple: is organic traffic going up?

But as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and other AI-powered platforms increasingly answer questions before someone visits a website, traffic alone is becoming a less reliable measure of digital performance.

New research from Search Engine Journal's State of Search 2027 highlights just how quickly this is changing.

Less traffic doesn't necessarily mean fewer bookings

One of the most interesting findings is that 39% of search professionals reported organic traffic declining or remaining flat while leads and conversions held steady or improved. Only 15% reported declines in both traffic and conversions.

For hotels, resorts, holiday parks and travel businesses, that's an important distinction.

Someone researching "best family resorts on the Gold Coast" may now get much of their initial information directly from Google or an AI platform without visiting multiple websites.

The people who eventually click through may therefore be further along the booking journey.

That means businesses need to look beyond rankings, sessions and clicks and increasingly measure what search is actually contributing to bookings, leads and revenue.

Don't abandon SEO for GEO

There's understandably a huge amount of attention going towards Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and improving visibility across AI platforms.

But there's an important warning in the research.

Only 14% of respondents currently identify AI answer-engine optimisation as one of their strongest drivers of results, yet 43% plan to prioritise or invest in GEO over the next year.

At the same time, proven areas such as technical SEO and refreshing existing content risk receiving less attention.

For travel and accommodation businesses, we believe the answer isn't SEO or GEO.

It's SEO + GEO.

Strong technical foundations, useful content, structured data, brand authority and a well-optimised website remain critical. Those same foundations increasingly help AI platforms understand, trust and recommend your business.

AI visibility needs to become a KPI

Another revealing finding is that only 9% of respondents feel very confident measuring AI visibility.

This needs to change.

Hotels and travel brands should increasingly understand:

  • Where their brand appears across AI-powered search platforms

  • Which questions and prompts they are being recommended for

  • How they compare with competitors

  • Which sources AI platforms are using when recommending their business or destination

  • How much website traffic, bookings and revenue are being influenced by AI platforms

Just as businesses learned to measure Google rankings, organic traffic and paid media ROAS, AI visibility is becoming another important part of the digital performance dashboard.

What should travel businesses do now?

Don't panic because organic traffic has dropped. And don't abandon SEO because AI is the latest focus.

Instead, look at the complete picture.

Continue investing in SEO. Start building your GEO strategy. Measure AI visibility. Focus more heavily on conversions and revenue. And make sure your website gives both travellers and AI platforms clear, useful and trustworthy information about your business.

Search isn't disappearing.

It's expanding - and the businesses that adapt how they're found, measured and marketed will be better positioned to capture the next generation of direct bookings.
